Advancing Reproductive Justice Grantmaking Guidelines

The Katz Amsterdam Foundation and Charitable Trust seek to reduce persistent racial disparities in access to abortion and contraception services and by increasing the power, reach and influence of reproductive justice organizations. We are committed to helping sustain organizations working within marginalized and underrepresented communities to foster lasting and systemic change.

Katz Amsterdam provides general operating support to organizations that are advancing reproductive justice by increasing abortion and contraception access, especially for communities of color.

We support organizations working to promote reproductive justice, including those that are:

  1. Advocating for reproductive justice by:
    • Educating and organizing voters on abortion and contraception policy change opportunities
    • Working to increase abortion and contraception access
    • Convening partnerships to align on advocacy efforts
    • Organizing and mobilizing communities of color to protect abortion seekers and to ensure an understanding of all their options.
  2. Protecting and supporting abortion providers by:
    • Providing legal support that protects providers from adverse consequences related to providing abortion care.
    • Building and convening provider focused peer-support networks and continuing education programs to ensure abortion seekers are met with high quality care.
  3. Connecting abortion-seekers with care
    • Abortion funds and financial support for abortion seekers, including wraparound practical support (transportation, lodging, childcare, aftercare)
    • Maintaining abortion hotlines that support mental and physical health by connecting patients to trusted medical providers and resources.
    • Supporting comprehensive reproductive equity for communities of color (contraceptives, birth control/ IUD, mifepristone, and self-managed abortion etc.)

We hope our partners:

  • Serve the needs of underserved communities of color by engaging in deep and meaningful base-building and advocacy.
  • Have leadership and staff with lived experience that is proximate to the work.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the reproductive justice landscape and their opportunity to impact meaningful and pervasive change.
    1. Understand how healthcare inequality and anti-choice policies disproportionately and detrimentally impact communities of color.
    2. Can articulate what reproductive equity is for their communities.
    3. Implement bold solutions to protect abortion seekers, providers and families.

Recognizing that communities are best served when their advocates come from within, Katz Amsterdam strives to support organizations that are community-based, community-driven and community-defined. We hope our partners:

  • Can articulate a specific goal of their efforts in furtherance of increased protections and equity for a certain population.
  • Appreciate the power of intersectionality.
  • Develop strategic planning that demonstrates how their work will (over time and in some cases immediately) build sustainable and transformative change for reproductive health initiatives.
